20 years of Open Call architecture competition procedure

This research project explores the Open Call architecture competition procedure as developed and used by the Flemish Government Architect and his/her team between 1999 and 2019. With the Open Call, the Government Architect supports public commissioners in their appointment of a design team for a commission. The exhibition highlights how this specific procedure creates opportunities for architectural quality. Case studies examine how clients, supported by project supervisors from Team Vlaams Bouwmeester, develop an ambitious commission, and how subsequently design teams are selected, sketch designs compared, and finally a design commission is awarded. The exhibition also examines how projects relate to the fragmented urbanisation in our country, and which contemporary architectural expressions were given to public institutions within the Open Call. These three aspects are addressed in an Archive, Panorama and Wunderkammer section of the travelling exhibition.
